This is the story of how I got my city, Athens. It all started when the gods all wanted the new city named after them. After a lot of fighting, it was left between Poseidon and I. We decided to have a contest. We were each to give a gift to the new city. Poseidon gave a large spring with salt water, and he promised them a great empire, a mighty navy, famed shipwrights, trading vessels, and to be known at every corner of the sea. I planted an olive tree. I said that the olive tree would allow a poor man to add flavor to his food, a rich man to prepare for his meal, an athlete a cleanser, oil, and lamplight. I said that the oil could be traded and give Athens riches. I promised to make the people of the city skilled in pottery, and that the jars the oil would be stored in would be beautiful. I also promised that the city will flourish and be famous in trade and the arts. The judges of the contest gave the city to me, and she named the new city Athens.
